History
History of Salem Lutheran Church

Salem was excited to celebrate 125 years of ministry in 2008!
Salem Lutheran Church was established August 4, 1883. The original site was rented property located at 208 Fayette Street (now Eaton Street). In 1888, Salem purchased a lot and built a new building at Glendale and Hamilton. Then, in 1897 the congregation moved to a new building located on Hamilton and Glen Oak. The current location on War Memorial Drive was built and dedicated on January 19, 1964, with a major addition in 1987. In the mid-to-late sixties, St. James and Faith Lutheran Churches disbanded. Many of their members joined Salem at that time.
Salem is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Central Southern Illinois Synod, and the Northern Conference.
